Procedural Options for Male & Female Pattern Baldness

Crown Session (Class 3-5V):

We disagree with the belief of many other medical groups that the crown should not be treated with transplants. Patients whose hair loss begins in the crown or who have more extreme baldness and desire full head coverage can be treated successfully. The key to success is the ability of the surgeon to be able to reproduce the natural whorl. We use an approach with single hairs to the whorl center surrounded by a margin of 2 hair grafts and 2-4 hair grafts for the periphery. Grafts are angled and created precisely to recreate the 360 degree hair direction change of the whorl necessary to make the hair lie properly. Without such attention to detail, crown treatment would not be possible.

Once the basic restoration is complete it sometimes is necessary to do touch-ups if there is more thinning to the margins of the existing pattern. We often prescribe Propecia and or Minoxidil in conjunction with transplants to control the further progression of crown balding.
